Stepping stone to a career in the Public Services

BTEC first certificate in public services

This one is for students who want to pursue careers in the public services – such as the Police, the Fire Service and the Army. Available for students at GCSE and A Level equivalent standards, the First Certificate in Public Services offers an insight into the work of many public service organisations and teaches some of the skills useful for jobs in this sector.

During their time at Lusty Glaze, the school students receive lessons in sport and fitness, first aid, basic life skills and community and cultural awareness. They also learn about the work of around 40 public service organsiations, and regularly receive talks by representatives who provide a valuable insight into the lives and careers of public service personnel.

Using the unique facilities available at the Lusty Glaze site, the students learn in a secure, outdoor environment. They will be taught how to use the adventure equipment, such as climbing ropes and paddle boards, to conduct rescues and develop skills in relation to outdoor activities.

As well as undertaking many practical exercises, students have to complete written coursework as part of their learning.

This GCSE level course also allows progression on to the BTEC Public Services diploma, offered by three centres (Duchy, St Austell and Camborne) in the Cornwall College Group.

Course leader David Whelan says, “People often forget what a crucial role these public services play in modern society. They don’t often feature as options in young people’s career choices. But not everyone is cut out for academic study, and some people may not want to go on to university.

“We want these youngsters to know that jobs in this sector are as valid, if not more important, than the standard career options presented at this age. What we’re trying to do is open the door to the range of possibilities and teach them some of the skills they will need for successful careers in this field.”
